Tortillas 101

The literature I've read about hosting foreign students says that American families have unrealistic expectations about this new relationship. For example, I should not expect to be exposed to new, exotic meals. Therefore, when I found out that Loyda wanted to make some tortillas, I eagerly hustled out to the tienda for some masa.

While I can't commit to making tortillas for breakfast each morning, she can go for it! I held up various kitchen supplies, and she said, "Yes" or "No." Then, because I'm curious and have a never-ending quest for knowledge, I asked her if I could watch. She looked at me like I had 2 heads and laughed. I assumed that my question was the equivalent to someone asking me if they could watch me fill a sippy cup with apple juice.

She really started laughing at me when I ran to get the camera to capture the tortilla making for you, faithful readers. At this point, Randy tried to tell her that I was silly, but, instead, accidentally called me a bad word in Guatemalan Spanish.

I was a little concerned when I saw how much dough she mixed up, but then only made 2 tortillas. She saved the extra dough for next time.

The result was an almost perfect, flat circle of dough. It looked like the tortillas from the store, but better. I went off the low-carb diet to try one. Yummy!
